How to Classify Outdoor Luminaires
Classifying Outdoor Lighting
Many opportunities have resulted from the LED revolution in architectural outdoor lighting that are not simply limited to efficiency and longevity. Much progress has been made into understanding the three dimensional nature of outdoor performance luminaires and how they position light relative to where it is the most beneficial. The ramifications of light distributions that are not well engineered can result in both light pollution (uplight) and light trespass (stray light). Comparing a luminaire’s photometric performance can give the lighting designer an idea of efficiency, distribution and light control. The Luminaire Classification System and B.U.G. ratings are explored.
